The Domestication of Animals

Текст задания
A
People have lived with animals for thousands of years. However, most animals we see on farms today are very different from their wild relatives. This change happened because humans chose which animals to keep and breed. The process is called domestication, and it took a very long time. Domestication changed the way animals looked and behaved. It also changed the way humans lived.
B
The first animal to become domesticated was the dog. This happened around 15,000 years ago in different parts of the world. Dogs came from wolves that lived near human camps. These wolves ate food waste that people left behind. The wolves that were less afraid of humans had more food. Over time, they became friendly and started helping humans hunt. People began to keep these animals because they were useful.
C
After dogs, people started to domesticate farm animals. Sheep were among the first farm animals to be domesticated about 11,000 years ago. People in the Middle East kept sheep for their meat and wool. Goats were domesticated around the same time in the same area. Both animals were easy to control because they lived in groups and followed a leader. This made them good choices for early farmers.
D
Cattle became domesticated later than sheep and goats. The process began around 10,500 years ago. Wild cattle were large and dangerous animals, so domesticating them was difficult. However, cattle provided many benefits. They gave milk, meat, and leather. Farmers also used cattle to pull heavy tools in the fields. This made farming much easier and allowed people to grow more food.
E
Pigs were domesticated in two separate places. People in China domesticated pigs around 9,000 years ago. At the same time, people in the Middle East also domesticated pigs on their own. Pigs were valuable because they ate almost anything. They could live on food scraps and plant waste. This meant farmers did not need to find special food for them. Pigs also produced large numbers of babies, which gave people plenty of meat.
F
Chickens were domesticated much later than other farm animals. The process started in Southeast Asia about 8,000 years ago. Wild chickens lived in forests and laid only a few eggs each year. Domesticated chickens produce many more eggs because people chose to breed the birds that laid the most. Today, chickens are kept all over the world for eggs and meat. They are now the most common farm bird.
G
Domestication changed animals in important ways. Domesticated animals became smaller than their wild relatives. Their brains also became smaller because they did not need to find food or escape from danger. Many domesticated animals developed new coat colours and patterns. These changes happened because people chose animals with certain features to breed. The animals that were calmer and easier to control were kept, while aggressive ones were not.
H
The domestication of animals had major effects on human society. People no longer needed to hunt for meat because they had farm animals. This meant they could stay in one place and build permanent homes. Villages and towns grew larger as farming produced more food. Domesticated animals also helped people travel longer distances and carry heavy goods. As a result, trade between different groups became possible, and human societies developed faster.
