This distribution pattern indicates that Lapita communities maintained regular contact across distances exceeding 4,500 kilometres. Researchers believe that these early traders exchanged not only ceramic goods but also obsidian, a volcanic glass highly valued for making cutting tools, which originated from specific geological sources and was transported considerable distances from its point of origin.
