Coral reefs represent one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet, supporting approximately 25 percent of all marine species despite occupying less than one percent of the ocean floor. These underwater structures are formed primarily by colonies of tiny animals called coral polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate to create hard, protective skeletons. Over thousands of years, the accumulation of these skeletons builds the complex three-dimensional frameworks that characterise reef systems. The majority of reef-building corals are found in shallow, warm waters between 23 and 29 degrees Celsius, where sunlight can penetrate sufficiently to support the photosynthetic organisms living within coral tissues.

The relationship between corals and zooxanthellae, microscopic algae residing within coral polyps, exemplifies one of nature's most successful symbiotic partnerships. These algae provide up to 90 percent of the energy corals require through photosynthesis, converting sunlight into nutrients that sustain coral growth and reproduction. In return, the coral polyps offer the algae a protected environment and access to compounds needed for photosynthesis. This interdependence explains why reef-building corals thrive only in clear, sunlit waters where light availability remains optimal. When environmental stressors disrupt this delicate balance, corals expel their zooxanthellae, resulting in the phenomenon known as coral bleaching.

Studies demonstrate that reef structures can reduce wave energy by up to 97 percent, significantly diminishing coastal erosion and storm damage to human settlements. The three-dimensional complexity of reefs causes waves to break and dissipate their force across the reef surface rather than impacting beaches and coastal infrastructure directly. This protective capacity becomes particularly valuable during extreme weather events, when storm surges and large waves threaten low-lying coastal areas. Nations with extensive reef systems have calculated that this natural barrier service prevents hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage annually.

Human activities pose increasingly severe threats to coral reef survival worldwide. Elevated ocean temperatures, driven by climate change, trigger widespread bleaching events that have affected approximately 70 percent of global reef systems since the 1980s. When water temperatures exceed normal ranges by just one to two degrees Celsius for extended periods, corals experience thermal stress and expel their zooxanthellae. While corals can recover from brief bleaching episodes, repeated or prolonged events often result in coral death. Ocean acidification, caused by absorption of atmospheric carbon dioxide, compounds these problems by reducing the availability of carbonate ions that corals need to build their calcium carbonate skeletons.

Local stressors further compromise reef resilience and recovery capacity. Overfishing removes key herbivorous fish species that control algae growth on reefs, allowing algae to overgrow and smother coral colonies. Destructive fishing practices, including the use of explosives and cyanide, directly damage reef structures and kill coral organisms. Coastal development increases sedimentation and nutrient pollution in reef waters, blocking sunlight and promoting algae blooms that outcompete corals for space. Agricultural runoff introduces pesticides and fertilisers that disrupt coral reproduction and growth processes. These combined pressures have resulted in the degradation of approximately 50 percent of the world's coral reefs over the past three decades.

Conservation efforts increasingly focus on enhancing reef resilience through marine protected areas and restoration initiatives. Protected areas restrict fishing and coastal development, allowing reef ecosystems to recover from previous damage and maintain ecological balance. Coral restoration programmes cultivate coral fragments in underwater nurseries before transplanting them onto degraded reefs, accelerating recovery processes that would otherwise require decades. Scientists are also developing techniques to identify and propagate heat-resistant coral strains that may better withstand future temperature increases. However, experts emphasise that local conservation measures cannot fully succeed without global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit ocean warming.
